<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a terahertz electromagnetic wave generation source capable of generating a terahertz electromagnetic wave with a simple element configuration while the generation is maintained for a long period of time. <P>SOLUTION: A terahertz electromagnetic wave generation source 101 includes an nipi laminate 110 having a semiconductor layered structure comprising at least three layers of an N-type semiconductor layer and a P-type semiconductor layer which are laminated alternately. A terahertz electromagnetic wave is generated by irradiating the nipi laminate 110 with an ultrashort pulse laser beam.
