The system has a fuel cell unit (2) i.e. cells, for generating electrical energy, an electrical storage for storage and/or delivery of electrical energy, and an electrical load i.e. drive motor. The drive motor is utilized for driving a motor vehicle, where the fuel cell unit is coupled to a diagnostic unit. The diagnostic unit is utilized for carrying out an internal error analysis and/or for spatially resolved detection of degradation and/or for estimating degradations probabilities within the fuel cell unit for continuous monitoring of physical states in the fuel cell unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for detection of degradation mechanisms in a fuel cell system.
