Regulation, automatic; boosting; equali"ing load on generator.-A motor 1, provided with a flywheel and used for driving a rolling-mill, is controlled so that it runs at full speed until the load-current reaches a predetermined limit, and thereupon its field 2 is strengthened so that it slows down at such a rate that the energy derived from the flywheel assists the load current and keeps the latter within the limit. When the current reaches said limit, a coil 11 operates a relay 8 causing a differentially wound relay 7 to short circuit resistance 6 in the field circuit of a booster 3, the armature of which is in series with the field 2. An antihunting coil 12 is associated with the coil 11 and causes the relay 8 to vibrate at such a rate as to keep the loadcurrent constant. As a transient peak load followed by a sustained full load would cause strengthening of the field 2 but no subsequent weakening so as to allow of return to full speed, the setting of the relay 8 is slowly increased by the action of a magnet 14 and a strong dash-pot 15, the magnet being energized by a relay 16 whenever the field 2 is strengthened.
