The invention relates to a method and driver circuit (14) for driving an output stage (16) in a controller (10). The driver circuit (14) comprises a power element (82) and a logic element (80), wherein a disconnection of the output stage (16) from a battery (20, 22) is made possible by triggering a fuse (30). The driver circuit (14) additionally comprises a buffer circuit (84). The switches (56 to 66) of at least one phase (50, 52, 54) of the output stage (16) are actuated by means of the power element (82) such that sufficiently high current for triggering the fuse (30) flows, while the buffer circuit (84) in the driver circuit (14) supplies the voltage.
