344,803. Separating solid materials. HOLMES, C. W. H., Deneside, Alverstone Avenue, Low Fell, and BIRTLEY CO., Ltd., Birtley, both in Durham. Aug. 28, 1929, No. 26220. [Class 117.] Apparatus for separating materials, such as a mixture of coal and shale or other mineral and agricultural products, consists of a stationary trough 4 with a perforated base 3 on which the materials are subjected to a continuous or pulsating air pressure from the air chamber 1 whereby they are stratified according to their densities, the lower and denser stratum being removed through adjustable discharge openings 12 by a conveyer 8 travelling over the surface 3, and the upper and lighter stratum being removed by the upper flight of the conveyer or another conveyer travelling in the opposite direction. The depth of the trough and the distance between the two conveyers may be adjustable, and the mass of material may be agitated to assist stratification by the vibrations of transverse grid members 16, 17 mounted on a frame 18. In a modification, the supporting surface may itself constitute the conveyer, being formed as shown in Fig. 7 of perforated plates 20 provided with short t rightangle e flanges. In the lower run, the plates lie horizontally to form the perforated support and the flanges act to discharge the lower stratum. In the upper run the plates are turned by a spider 22 so as to hang vertically. The feed hopper 6 is mounted for adjustment along the length of the trough.
