[Class 46.] Vertical filter cells, immersed in material to be thickened, rotate as a whole about a common vertical axis and each individual cell rotates about its own axis during a period while it is being cleaned by a reverse flow of compressed air. The cells 73 are carried by plates 16, 17, fixed to a sleeve 15, which is attached to the moving part 18 of a distributing valve and can be clutched to a central shaft 5 so as to rotate therewith. A flange 37 on the lower end of an elbow pipe 44 is pressed on the upper end of the suction pipe 25 of each cell by a spring 38 which engages a hinged stirrup 39. The pipe 44 has a rectangular section so that the arms of the stirrup 39 will prevent its rotating. The suction pipe 25 is connected by a pipe 44, a glass tube 46 and a pipe 47 with a cut-off cock 49 to an aperture in the plate 18. The upper plate of the distributer has connections to suction and compressed air so that as they rotate each cell reaches a position in which a back flow of compressed air detaches the cake therefrom. Each element as it comes into the position in which it is connected to the source of compressed air is rotated by a driving-wheel which is carried by a pivoted arm and pressed by a spring into engagement with a spur or friction wheel 27 keyed on a collar 26 fixed to the suction pipe 25 of the element. The material under treatment is supplied through an inlet 2 to the tank 1 which may have a jacket 4. The discharge of the thickened mud through an outlet pipe 3 is promoted by agitators 67, 69 on a shaft 8 rotating with the shaft 5. Each cell 73 comprises a cylindrical filtering wall with end caps 71, 72 and an inner air-tight body 74 held in position by tie rods 75. |
