The slave has two channels (K1, K2) comprising two switches (S1, S2), where a switching state of the switches is transferred by a code sequence. A communication circuit is formed as a bus circuit, and coupling elements (U1-U4) are provided between a code sequence generator and the communication circuit in data transfer lines (L0-L4). The coupling elements permit or suppress data transfer in the data transfer lines. A bridge section (B) is provided between the channels and serves for short-circuit detection and acts on one of the coupling elements.
