The device has a laser diode (102) generating a laser beam, and a quarter-wave plate (105) modifying linear polarization of the laser beam into circular polarization and vice versa. A concave mirror (107) sends the laser beam towards an atomic gas cell (106). A photodetector (109) is placed behind the minor. The mirror is semitransparent, and allows a portion of the laser beam to pass. The photodetector controls optical frequency of the laser beam and/or controls the temperature of the gas cell.
