PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyolefin of extremely high molecular weight.

SOLUTION: This UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) having a weight-average molecular weight of at least 400,000 g/mol and molecular weight distribution of less than 2.6 is obtained by preparing a polymer containing at least one of aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbyl 2-20C olefin in the presence of an ionic catalyst containing an amidine-containing ligand and an activator and occasionally a scavenger.
