A remote control unit (10, 10') generates a first beam (12) which a user points at one of a plurality of information appliances (161-16n) to select that appliance. After selecting the desired appliance, the user then actuates a button on a control keypad (24) on the remote control unit to cause the unit to generate a second, modulated beam 14. The remote control unit modulates the second beam in accordance with a desired functionality of the information appliance to control the appliance accordingly.
