Textile and wood products, leather, and animal foodstuffs and like perishable materials not intended for human consumption are protected from moulds, yeasts and bacteria by addition thereto of an ester of isothiocyanic acid or of a mixture of such esters. The esters used include ethyl, butyl, allyl and phenyl isothiocyanate and the amount added may be as small as 0,01 to 0,0001 per cent by weight. The preservative may be added alone or in an emulsion or solution, and to the whole mass or only sprayed on the surface of the material treated. Green fodder is preserved in silos or pits by spraying on the surface layer with a mixture of equal amounts of allyl and phenyl isothiocyanate emulsified in water or acid. Sheets of cellulose are preserved by p spraying thereon phenyl isothiocyanate in solution or as an aqueous emulsion.
