PURPOSE: A driving device of a liquid crystal display device and a driving method thereof are provided to improve image quality by varying a light emission area of a backlight according to a brightness property of an image. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of panel drivers drive a liquid crystal panel. A timing controller(8) controls a plurality of panel drivers by generating control signals. The timing controller sets the number of division driving areas of a backlight by analyzing brightness distribution of image data inputted from the outside and generates a dimming control signal for controlling the brightness of each division driving area. A backlight unit(12) divides the driving areas of the backlight according to the dimming control signal and the number of the set division driving area and radiates light to the liquid crystal panel by driving each driving area according to the dimming control signal.
