PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for recognizing a location by using a distance signal are provided to improve location estimation performance by modeling a distance land mark using a polar coordinate or spherical coordinate. CONSTITUTION: A location recognizing device(100) includes a distance sensor(110), a distance land mark information processor(120), and a location recognizer(130). The distance sensor senses a distance from the distance land mark. The distance landmark information processor generates distance landmark information by receiving the distance signal from the distance sensor. The location recognizer registers the extracted real distance land mark information as the distance land mark for recognizing the location and recognizes the location with the registered distance land mark.
