A lighting device is configured in such a manner that the electric discharge tube does not break or is less likely to break when a member for gripping the electric discharge tube is elastically deformed. A backlight device comprises: an electric discharge tube (28) having electrodes at both ends thereof and also having a bent section bent in a U shape; a backlight chassis having a bottom section and containing, on the front side of the bottom section, the electric discharge tube (28); a lamp clip (30) having a body section (30a) which is attached to the bottom section of the backlight chassis and also having a lamp rubber (30b) which is provided to the body section (30a) and which elastically grips the bent section of the electric discharge tube (28); and a first holder (20) for covering the bent section of the electric discharge tube (28). The first holder (20) has a rib (20a) protruding inside the first holder (20). In a state in which the bent section of the electric discharge tube (28) is covered with the first holder (20), the rib (20a) is in contact with the body section (30a) of the lamp clip (30) and is separated from the lump rubber (30b) of the lamp clip (30).
