The blood storage device (1) comprises a housing (2) enclosing a cooling chamber and having an access opening (3), and a heating- and cooling unit. Drawer-shaped storage compartments (4) are provided in the cooling chamber. The individual storage compartment is movably mounted on a rail system (5), so that the individual storage compartment is extendable from the access opening. The individual drawer-shaped storage compartment has a sub-division. The individual compartments are delimited from each other by moving walls (7). The bottom of the individual compartment is formed as aperture mask. The blood storage device (1) comprises a housing (2) enclosing a cooling chamber and having an access opening (3) and a heating- and cooling unit. Drawer-shaped storage compartments (4) are provided in the cooling chamber. The individual storage compartment is movably mounted on a rail system (5), so that the individual storage compartment is extendable from the access opening. The individual drawer-shaped storage compartment has a sub-division. The individual compartments are delimited from each other by moving walls (7). The bottom of the individual compartment is formed as aperture mask. The individual drawer-shaped compartment has a thermo-insulated panel (10) on its front side, where the individual panel is dimensioned such that the access opening is completely closed in an inserted position of the storage compartment and is thermo-insulated against the environment of the blood storage device. On the front side of the individual panel, holders and/or control elements for receiving identification mechanisms are provided and a handle for manual opening and/or a device for engaging a separate automatic opening device are provided. The rail system is equipped with a drive formed as an electrical motor and is movable by using the drive. The drive is controlled by a central control unit that is arranged outside of the blood storage device. The rail system comprises an emergency opening. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a blood storage device.
