摘要 A system for extracting energy from inertial confinement fusion reactions includes a central target chamber 10 for receiving fusion target material via pellet injectors 16. A plurality of at least six energy drivers 12 are arranged around the exterior of the target chamber so as to directly supply synchronous x-ray pulse energy to fusion target material in the chamber at an energy level that avoids the creation of an exploding shockwave emanating from the target material prior to initiating and imploding phase of a fusion reaction of the material, releasing energy in the forms of fusion plasma and heat. The energy drivers are oriented to supply a synchronous x-ray pulse to the fusion target material in a 3-dimensionally symmetric manner about a spherical pellet of the fusion target material, and are controlled so that the energy is supplied exclusively as synchronous x-rays in pulse form to the target material. A plurality of structures for extracting energy from the fusion reaction are provided, and comprise devices 14 to extract high voltage DC power from the fusion plasma, and devices 18 to extract thermal energy from the central target chamber. Power to the energy drivers may be supplied from high voltage DC power extracted from the fusion reactions. The energy drivers may use an Apodizing filter to impart a desired shape to the wavefront of the X-ray pulses for causing the fusion reactions, to avoid hydrodynamic instabilities. The energy drivers may emit radio frequency energy to heat the fusion target material.
