A hydroelectric turbine 10 comprises a stator 12 and a shaftless rotor 14. The stator 12 defines an opening in which the rotor 14 is housed for rotation. The opening is shaped and dimensioned to permit the rotor 14 to undergo rotation about a central axis of the rotor 14, and displacement along the circumference of the opening in a direction opposite to that in which the rotor 14 is rotating.
