Disclosed herein is a pyridazinone compound of formula I wherein the substituents are as defined within the specification, processes for their preparation, compositions comprising said compounds and uses thereof. Said compounds are useful as caspase inhibitors and as such are useful in the treatment or prevention of inflammation, apoptosis, dementia, cerebral stroke, brain impairment due to AIDS, diabetes, gastric ulcer, cerebral injury by hepatitis, hepatitis-induced hepatic diseases, acute hepatitis, fulminant hepatic failure, sepsis, organ transplantation rejection, rheumatic arthritis, cardiac cell apoptosis due to ischemic cardiac diseases, or liver cirrhosis.
