482,003. Spray-producers. BURGESS, E., and AEROGRAPH CO., Ltd. Dec. 24, 1936, No. 35432. [Class 69 (iii)] In a paint &c. sprayer of the kind in which a needle valve controlling the liquid outlet is operated by compressed air acting on a member so connected to the valve stem that air has access to the latter, leakage is prevented along the valve stem by packing which is accessible for adjustment. The stem Y of the needle valve which is retracted by a piston X in a cylinder V in axial alignment with the nozzle passes through stuffing boxes d, d<1> provided with glands e, e<1> which are accessible from outside the apparatus. Liquid is admitted through a passage D and compressed air through a passage P leading to an annular space Q connected by a passage R to the spray head, and through a passage U to the cylinder V. The stem Y passes loosely through the piston and carries an abutment q against which the piston engages. The piston X is acted on by a spring n and a spring r engages the abutment q. A tubular screw p through which the stem Y passes serves as an adjustable stop to limit the travel of the valve. In a modification the valve stem is rigidly attached to a diaphragm acted on by compressed air. Separate air supplies may be provided for actuating the valve and atomizing the liquid. |
