The inflator (20) has a gas producer for releasing gas stream upon activation to inflate an inflatable multilayer safety belt from outside of one of two layers of the belt. A blowing up device comprises a pivotable deflector (27) that is pivotable from a transport position into an active position. The deflector projects in the transport position into withdrawing gas stream. The deflector is pivoted from the active position to a position in which withdrawing gas stream is released. The gas generator is a pyrotechnic gas generators and a cold gas generator.
