<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To seal an electrophoretic dispersion liquid by a method which prevents air bubbles from mixing in the liquid and is independent from a composition of the dispersion liquid. <P>SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing an electrophoretic display device includes steps of: forming a plurality of cells 103 by disposing barrier walls 102 on a substrate 101; filling the plurality cells 103 with an electrophoretic dispersion liquid 105 containing electrophoretic particles; laminating a counter substrate 106 on the plurality of cells 103 filled with the electrophoretic dispersion liquid 105; and compressing the structure 200 comprising the laminated substrate 101, the barrier walls 102 and a counter substrate 106 by pressing in the thickness direction. The barrier walls 102 include clearances 104 that connect adjoining cells 103.
