Method for the treatment of thread

A method of treating extruded artificial thread comprises advancing the thread in the form of a helix on a thread storage and advancing device, heating the thread by introducing steam into the interior of the device, and emitting at least a portion of the steam, or steam condensate, from the interior of the device into contact with the advancing thread in at least one section of the helix. The thread storing and advancing device shown in Fig. 2 comprises a cylindrical member 36 having a series of longitudinal peripheral ribs 39 which interdigitate with bar members 40 bolted to a flange 55. The cylindrical member 36 is carried by flanges 43 and 46 which are in turn carried by collars 50 upon a driving shaft 30. Fluid-tight seals 44 and 47 are placed between the collars 50 and the flanges 43, 46. The rear collar 50 abuts a shoulder 51 upon the shaft 30, and a bolt 48 exerting pressure upon a collar 49 fixedly retains the cylindrical member 36 upon the shaft 30. The flange 55 is carried by a pair of spaced bearings 57, only one of which is shown, the axis of which is at a slight inclination to the axis of the shaft 30. A gear 62 is bolted to the flange 55 and enmeshes with a gear 61 bolted to the flange 46 thus providing a driving attachment between the member 36 and the bar members 40. Steam is admitted to the interior of cylinder 36 from the hollow shaft 30 through parts 70, and steam or steam condensate escapes from the cylinder on to the advancing thread through apertures 71. The apertures may be at either end or both ends of the cylinder or intermediate the ends. Two such reels 16 and 17 may be incorporated in the production of viscose rayon threads wherein the viscose is extruded from a nozzle 11, Fig. 1, into an acid bath 10 and the thread 12 is conducted over a series of reels 15-19 tilted upwardly at their outer ends. The reel 19 is a steam-heated drying cylinder, and the threads are taken up on a cap spinning apparatus 20. The thread may be treated with liquids applied through nozzles 14, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. The acid bath 10 may comprise sulphuric, phosphoric, nitric or hydrochloric acid, and the treating liquids applied through the nozzles 14 and 21-25 may be water, an aqueous acid solution, a solution of sodium or potassium sulphide, trisodium phosphate or sodium sulphite, an aqueous solution of hypochlorous acid, sodium or potassiumchlorite or -hypochlorite or chlorous acid and an aqueous oil or wax emulsion which may include a wetting agent and which may be applied separately or may be incorporated with one or more of the other treating liquids. Steam is admitted to the interior of the cylinder 36 from the hollow shaft 30 through ports 70 and steam or steam condensate escapes through apertures 71 which may be arranged at either or both ends or intermediate the ends of the cylinder.
