PURPOSE: A message list display method of a portable terminal and apparatus thereof are provided to improve the convenience of a user by displaying a chat type message including a user interface at the portable terminal. CONSTITUTION: A control unit(160) constitutes the scroll bar of a connection type which is connected to the bottom of a scroll bar display area and the scroll bar display area. The control unit reproduces the selected contact message and the received messages. The control unit minimizes the size of a scroll bar according to the number of the reproduced message. A display unit(150) displays the reproduced message according to a reproducing sequence. The display unit displays a scroll bar which is constituted by the control unit.
