A method and a device for adjusting size of a list element are provided. The method includes the following steps: a client obtains a multi-touch event; the client adjusts size of the avatar control element and that of the contact panel control element of the list element according to event parameters in the multi-touch event. The device for adjusting the size of the list element includes: an obtaining module (710) for obtaining a multi-touch event; an adjusting module (720) for adjusting the size of the avatar control element and the contact panel control element of the list element according to the event parameters in the multi-touch event. Using the invention can adjust the list element, ensures that the multi-touch event maintain compatibility with the existing operation and improves ease of use for Instant Messaging (IM) client.
