<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and an image processing method which make it possible to recognize a specific image efficiently, while preventing deterioration of reading quality. <P>SOLUTION: A copy machine 100 performs two types of determination, namely, simple determination processing and detail determination processing, by a determination unit 60 regarding whether or not a specific image is contained in an image data. The detail determination processing performs the determination for the image data when the simple determination processing determines that the specific image is contained. When the simple determination processing determines that the specific image is contained, at least one of data input to a converter 30 and data output from the converter 30 halt while a reading operation by an image reading unit 20 continues.
