PURPOSE: A light emitting diode and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to prevent the leakage of light to the side of a waveguide by forming a zinc oxide crystalline rod structure on the surface of a light emitting structure which emits light. CONSTITUTION: A light emitting structure(200) is formed on a substrate(100). The light emitting structure is composed of a N-type semiconductor layer(210), a light emitting layer(220), and a P-type semiconductor layer(230). A seed layer(400) is formed on the top of the light emitting structure. The seed layer is formed through the coating or the dispersion of a zinc oxide particle. A current spreading layer(235) is formed between the P-type semiconductor layer and an electrode(300).
