<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the vibrations from propagating upstream through a glass ribbon when glass sheets are cut from the glass ribbon. <P>SOLUTION: The glass ribbon 140 including opposing edges and a lateral portion 142 extending between the edges is fusion-drawn along a draw direction 128 into a viscous zone downstream. The glass ribbon is drawn into a setting zone downstream from the viscous zone and into an elastic zone downstream from the setting zone. A vacuum is created in the elastic zone to force the entire lateral portion of the glass ribbon to engage an anvil portion 220 of a breaking device. Then, a score line 518 is formed along the lateral portion of the glass ribbon and a glass sheet 152 is broken away from the glass ribbon along the score line while the entire lateral portion is forced against the anvil portion by the vacuum. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
