[Class 46] Lubricating oil is filtered by gravity through a relatively coarse filter 3 in a chamber 1 into a chamber 8, a valve 7 is then closed and compressed air is admitted by a valve 10 to force the oil through a finer filter 15 in a chamber 12 into a chamber 18, provided with an airvent 20 and a draw-off valve 19. The valves 7, 10 may be interlocked. A ball cock 13 may be arranged to close the pipe 11 when the chamber 8 is almost empty and operate a mercury switch 26 to switch off a thermostaticallycontrolled heater 14 in the pipe. Gauges 16, 92 are provided on the chambers 12, 18 and an air vent 29 on the chamber 12. The filter 3 may consist of a star-shaped unit of felt &c. supported on wire gauze and the filter 15 of tightly compressed rings of felt or ceramic material of compressed sawdust &c. which may be used as fire-lighters when impregnated with oil, or may be of hollow finned ceramic construction provided with rotary cleaning blades. The filter 3 may be cleaned by opening the valve 7 to release compressed air to flow therethrough. A rotatable blade or blades may be arranged in the channel 24 to force sludge through a gate valve 25. |
