<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cover material for ball which has a good grip feeling regardless of the state of sweat on a hand with minimized change in weight or handling property. <P>SOLUTION: The cover material for ball includes a porous coat layer formed on a base layer composed of fiber, a polymer elastic body and a water repellent, the coat layer being composed of a polymer elastic body and free from the water repellent, and the surface of the coat layer having an opening. Preferably, the thickness of the coat layer is 0.15-0.25 mm, the apparent density of the base layer is within the range of 0.2 to 0.5 g/cm<SP POS="POST">3</SP>, the water repellent is a fluorine-based water repellent, and the absorption time of droplets on the surface side (0.02 cm<SP POS="POST">3</SP>) is within 15 minutes. A method for manufacturing the cover material for ball includes: performing water repellent treatment on a base body composed of fiber and a polymer elastic body, and applying a porous coat layer having an opening thereon.
