The method involves adjusting an initial electrical state of polarization of a piezoelectric actuator (11) by default polarization of determined parameter. A set of parameters (22, 23) representing current electrical state of polarization of the actuator is determined during operation of the actuator. Deviation for a respective parameter of a corresponding comparison value planned for current operation is determined. The polarization of the actuator is changed by adaptation of the polarization of determined parameter in dependence of the determined deviation. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling electrical polarization of a piezoelectric actuator of an injection element in an internal combustion engine.
