A communication device (1) is provided with an electric field communication modulation/demodulation unit (6) for performing electric field communication with a communication device on the transmission medium side via an electric field communication electrode (2), a control unit (13) for controlling the operation of the electric field communication modulation/demodulation unit (6), a power supply unit (4) for supplying power to the control unit (13), a switch (5) for turning on or off the power from the power supply unit (4) to the control unit (13), and a detection unit (3) for, when the switch (5) is in a turn-off state, switching the switch to a turn-on state by the displacement of the electric field of a transmission medium received by the electric field communication electrode (2) when part of the transmission medium is brought into contact with or into proximity at a predetermined distance or less to the electric field communication electrode (2).
