Operating a Lean Nitrogen Oxide Trap in an exhaust line 224 of an Internal Combustion Engine 110, the method comprising, starting a DeNOx regeneration event of the Lean NOx Trap (LNT) 285, monitoring an engine speed value, an engine torque value, and a Lambda value upstream of the LNT, determining a DeNOx rate of progress (KDeNOx) for the regeneration event on the basis of the engine speed and torque values, the Lambda value and a value of a NOx stored mass in the LNT at the start of the regeneration event, monitoring an elapsed time value (DeN0x time) starting from the beginning of regeneration event, multiplying the DeNOx rate of progress (KDeN0x) by the elapsed time value (DeN0x time) in order to calculate a percentage of regeneration event performed (DeNOX perc), and ending the regeneration event when the percentage of regeneration event performed (DeNOXperc) reaches a predefined threshold (Target DeNOxperc). The invention allows a reduction in fuel consumption during the regeneration event and improves the effectiveness of the regeneration by defining an optimal DeNOx duration.
