<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve durability of a fuel cell that uses a non-platinum catalyst metal. <P>SOLUTION: A fuel cell 10 comprises a planar membrane electrode assembly 50 held between a separator 34 and a separator 36. The membrane electrode assembly 50 includes a solid polymer electrolyte membrane 20, an anode 22 and a cathode 24. The cathode 24 includes a laminate composed of a cathode catalyst layer 30 and a cathode gas diffusion layer 32. The cathode catalyst layer 30 is composed of an ionomer, carrier particles, a catalyst metal and a SiO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>component. The SiO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>component covers at least a part of surroundings of the catalyst metal and carrier particles. A SiO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>content is 1 to 30 mass% relative to a reference mass (total mass of the carrier particles, catalyst metal and SiO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>component), and the volume resistivity of the cathode catalyst layer 30 is 1 to 300 Ω cm (the maximum number inclusive). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
