PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance reliability of contrast AF when an object is too dark or too bright and to reduce occurrence ratio of a defocused image. SOLUTION: AF search for calculating an AF evaluation value according to contrast components of the object is performed as transferring a photographic lens over a focusing range (a step S12). When it is discriminated that reliability of automatic focusing (AF) is low based on the evaluation value calculated at the time of AF search (a step S14), the AF search is performed again after changing setting of focus exposure in an imaging means (steps S22, S30) and setting change of the focus exposure is repeated until the reliability of AF becomes high.
