<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system for an internal combustion engine capable of supporting a displacement member at a predetermined position while preventing wear at an engaging part of a movable element and a groove, and its control device. <P>SOLUTION: The system includes a configuration for supporting the operation state of a valve 30 in a closed state utilizing the engagement of a groove 78d formed at a first link arm 78 and a lock pin 92 energized toward the first link arm 78 by an electromagnetic solenoid 90.
