<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reproducibility of an original position. <P>SOLUTION: A photoelectric encoder comprises a scale 10 in which main tracks 14 for detecting the movement amount are formed in a measuring direction. The photoelectric encoder comprises origin signal generation parts (original detection parts 14a and 54a) which have a narrower track width than the other portion provided at a part of a direction orthogonal to the measuring direction of the main track 14.
