There is provided cyclonic separating apparatus (100; 200) for a cleaning appliance (10). The cyclonic separating apparatus (100; 200) comprises a plurality of cyclonic separators (104; 204, 118; 214, 136) arranged in series for separating particles from a dirt- and dust-laden airflow, at least three collectors (106; 206, 130; 220, 144) for collecting separated dirt and dust, and a closure member (150; 224) movable between a closed position in which the closure member (150; 224) closes an end of each collector (106; 206, 130; 220, 144) and an open position in which separated dirt and dust can be emptied from the collectors (106; 206, 130; 220, 144). The ends of the collectors (106; 206, 130; 220, 144) are separated by dividing walls (132; 222, 146). A seal (166; 234) is adapted and arranged to seal between the closure member (150; 224) and the dividing walls (132; 222, 146) when the closure member (150; 234) is in the closed position. By providing an expandable seal (166; 234) which seals between the at least one dividing wall (132; 222, 146) and the closure member (150; 224), the seal (166; 234) is able to seal effectively even if the closure member (150; 224) is misaligned, incorrectly fitted or if dirt and dust is present between the surfaces to be sealed. This is because the seal (166; 234) is able to expand in order to seal tightly between the surfaces to be sealed. |
