A linear-acting, free-piston internal combustion engine comprises a power piston 11a reciprocating in a power chamber 18a and a compression piston 23 reciprocating in a compression chamber 29a. The power piston, or pistons, and the compression piston are rigidly connected by means of a rod 19. The compression piston 23 performs alternately an intake stroke and a compression stroke at the same time that the power piston performs alternately a power stroke and an exhaust stroke. By performing the intake and compression strokes separately from the power and exhaust strokes, the engine is able to provide improved fuel efficiency and lower exhaust gas emissions. The engine may also have a second power piston 11b reciprocating in a power chamber 18b and a compression piston 23 reciprocating in a compression chamber 29b wherein the power stroke of the second power piston can drive the exhaust stroke of the first power piston, and also having a conduit 28 connecting the chambers and acting as a compressed fluid reservoir. |
