<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor light-emitting element capable of improving light utilization efficiency by raising TE/TM polarization ratio and to provide a liquid crystal display device using the semiconductor light-emitting element as a backlight source which eliminates the need of a polarizing plate. <P>SOLUTION: A semiconductor light-emitting element includes an active layer 104 formed on a substrate 101, a ridge waveguide 107a formed on the active layer 104, and a semiconductor laminate body which emits light from at least one of a front end face and rear end face. The ridge waveguide 107a has a groove 113 which is at least one non-connecting part between the front end face and rear end face, and is composed of a plurality of waveguide portions 107a1, 107a2, and 107a3 isolated by the groove 113. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
