<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor light-emitting element capable of improving light utilization efficiency by raising TE/TM polarization ratio and to provide a liquid crystal display device using the semiconductor light-emitting element as a backlight source which eliminates the need of a polarizing plate. <P>SOLUTION: A semiconductor light-emitting element includes an active layer 104 formed on a substrate 101, a ridge waveguide 107a formed on the active layer 104, and a semiconductor laminate body which emits light from at least one of a front end face and rear end face.
