The device (1) has multiple movable holders (3) arranged in row along a conveying path (5) for conveying preforms (2). An arbor (6) for holding the preforms is provided at the holders. A collet (7) is provided parallel to a major axis (6a) of the arbor for repelling the preform from the arbor. A fixed actuator (9) is arranged at the conveying path for operating the holders. The collet is pushed against a face surface of an opening region (2b) of the preform. The fixed actuator comprises a pressure roller (11) for transferring an adjusting force (F) to the collet. An independent claim is also included for a method for selecting a preform.
