摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator that is used in a rechargeable battery with a nonaqueous electrolyte, has high oxidation-reduction resistance and achieves a good balance between a shape maintenance and a shutdown characteristic at a high temperature and a rechargeable battery with a nonaqueous electrolyte that is provided with such a separator and features high safety. <P>SOLUTION: The separator for a rechargeable battery with a nonaqueous electrolyte is formed with a laminate including at least two layers that are laminated. At least one of the layers has a shutdown temperature of 140&deg;C or lower. At least one of the layers has a heat deflection temperature of 100&deg;C, as measured by JIS K 7207 A-method. The layer facing with a positive electrode has an oxygen index of 26, as measured by JIS K 7201. Preferably, the layer facing with a negative electrode is formed with a material that does not discolor even it is in contact with a metal Li in Ar air current for one hour.
