Printed matter comprises one or more layers of print 28 on at least one side of a substrate 12 and a continuous outer layer 36 overlying both sides of the substrate, wherein the outer layer comprises an antibacterial additive. The substrate may be produced from paper card, cardboard or a polymer and the printed matter may be in the form of food packaging, a menu, a bank note or medical notes. A composition suitable as the outer layer comprising the antibacterial additive is also disclosed. The composition preferably contains a solution or suspension of silver ions. The composition may also comprise a metal, a matting agent, a wax, a gloss agent, a surface modifier, a pigment, a dryer, a crosslinker, an accelerator or an anti-slip agent. An adhesion agent may also be provided to facilitate adhesion of the composition to the substrate. A method of printing is also claimed. |
