A desalination unit is characterised by having three separate modules, one module corresponding to a sea water intake pump 1, another module corresponding to a silex (RTM) sand filter 4 and a third module for controlling the operation of the unit to produce drinking water. The third module also comprises a multiple cartridge filter 12 through which the water from the sand filter passes, before reaching a set of reverse osmosis modules 14. The reverse osmosis modules have two outlets, one for brine and another for drinking water which is collected in a storage tank 16. A dosing pump (22, Fig. 2) adds chlorine or other chemicals to the drinking water. The desalination unit is preferably installed on a boat/ship. |
