<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing erroneous detection of breakout in a method for predicting the breakout, specifically the restrained breakout which can be caused in continuous casting of molten metal. <P>SOLUTION: The method for predicting the breakout of the continuous casting includes: measuring die temperature of a surface vicinity in contact with the molten metal of a continuous casting die; recognizing a point where the measured temperature increases with elapse of time and thereafter decreases as a peak p; and predicting the breakout based on the peak p. When the temperature of the peak p is made to be T<SB POS="POST">p</SB>, the time thereof is made to be t<SB POS="POST">0</SB>, and the die temperature at time t<SB POS="POST">1</SB>after time t<SB POS="POST">0</SB>is made to be T<SB POS="POST">t</SB>, and a temperature decreasing rate θ obtained from a formula (1) is smaller than a preliminarily determined threshold θ<SB POS="POST">b</SB>, the peak p is not used for breakout prediction, wherein θ=(T<SB POS="POST">p</SB>-T<SB POS="POST">t</SB>)/(t<SB POS="POST">1</SB>-t<SB POS="POST">0</SB>) (1).
