The device has a sensing unit (28) for retaining running noise of a bearing (18), and a signal processing unit (36) i.e. mobile communication apparatus e.g. mobile telephone and personal digital assistant, for analyzing a frequency spectrum of the running noise. The retained running noise is transferred from the sensing unit to the signal processing unit by a data device (34). The sensing unit comprises a memory (32) for memorizing the retained running noise, and the signal processing unit is formed for displaying an analysis result. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a functional state of a bearing.
