<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet recording apparatus that is free from paper jamming and paper stain generated due to deformation of the paper in accordance with the placement direction of the paper. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a sensor for detecting the dimensions of the paper in the longitudinal direction and the lateral direction. When the placement direction of the paper is detected to be lateral with respect to the conveyance direction, paper deformation countermeasure operations such as widening the gap between an inkjet recording head and the paper, reducing the ink discharge amount, and extending the waiting time between forward scanning and reverse scanning of the recording head are executed.
