<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image compression device, an image output device, an image reader, an image compression method, a computer program, and a recording medium, which improve the visibility of characters included in compressed images. <P>SOLUTION: A color image processor 2 detects edges of black characters and characters of a user specified color in an image when compressing the image with a compression processing portion 3. Then, the color image processor 2 respectively generates foreground layers for black and color characters by expressing the detected black and color characters in binary images and reversibly compresses each foreground layer. Further, the color image processor 2 generates a background layer by reducing a density difference between the edges and another portion in the image and irreversibly compresses the background layer. This processing allows the outlines of black characters and characters of the user specified color to be expressed clearly and suppresses the artifacts caused by performing irreversible compression. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
