<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly identify a format even in a recognition processing system in which a plurality of formats may be supposed in respect to a character string recognition apparatus and a character string recognition method for reading out a character string existing on a medium. <P>SOLUTION: An image processing area (character string retrieval range) is set on the medium (S12). The image processing area (character string retrieval range) is divided along an array direction of a character string and generates a plurality of sections (S13). Projection of image data is calculated in each section along the array direction of the character string (S14). The number of character strings in each section is calculated based on the projection of the image data (S15). The number of character strings in the whole image processing area (character string retrieval range) is determined based on the number of character string in each section (S16).
