<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp unit detecting a sign that a lamp suffers breakage before the lamp suffers the breakage to prevent the breakage of the lamp. <P>SOLUTION: A discharge lamp unit includes a discharge lamp, a lighting device supplying a current to the discharge lamp, and a detection circuit controlling current supply to the discharge lamp by controlling the lighting device when expansion of the discharge lamp is detected.
