The disclosed power conversion device (140) is provided with: an inverter circuit (12) which has bridge-connected power semiconductor elements and is connected to a DC power source via a contactor which can be opened and closed; a driver circuit (21) which drives the power semiconductor elements; a driver circuit control unit (18) which controls the driver circuit by PWM (pulse width modulation) and performs switching of the power semiconductor elements; a voltage smoothing capacitor (500) connected in parallel to the input side of the inverter circuit; a driver power circuit (27) which, connected in parallel to the voltage smoothing capacitor, inputs the voltage applied to said voltage smoothing capacitor and feeds power to the driver circuit; a discharge circuit which, comprising a resistance (25) for discharging charges of the voltage smoothing capacitor and a discharge switching element (26) connected in series to said resistance, is connected in parallel to the voltage smoothing capacitor; and a discharge control unit (24) which, when the contactor is set to an open state, allows current to flow to the discharge switching element and performs discharge from the discharge circuit.
